Owning a Fashion Photography Studio

Often, when a paparazzo dreams about his future career, he'll dream of owning his own fashion photography studio. Getting to this point is frequently a long process of coaching and gaining acceptance in his portfolio so that firms need to hire him to do their photography and work with their models. A fashion shutter-bug does not need to own his own studio however to become successful. He will also independent, where he is hired by different corporations to take photographs for them for different projects on a short term basis. This kind of photographer may also focus on other fields as well,eg nature photography, so that his portfolio is more rounded and he will be able to find more niches for his work.

Training and Experience

Some fashion photography studio owners begin their careers in art school, learning the fundamentals of photography and then concentrating on their field of study. The early classes often target the basics of photography, like the camera use with different types of cameras, photograph processing, lighting strategies, and creative controls that can be used for depth and motion in their work. Once the basic coaching has been done, then the individual begins to specialise in the fashion photography field, taking classes on ways to image models, placing clothing and posing models to their best affect for creativity and composition. During this stage of training, the snapper will often do an internship in a fashion photography studio so that he'll gain valuable hands on experience under the tutelage of professional fashion photographers, as well as beginning to build his own portfolio by getting some of his work revealed for the 1st time.

Once he is done with the internship and obtains his degree, he will most likely start to work for another company, either a fashion photography studio, or another kind of company that uses fashion photography in its business. Some options for the individual that is only starting out are to work for an advertising company that caters to the fashion industry, work for a publication or fashion manufacturer, or work for a retailer or direct mail company. There is also the option to freelance either with an agent or without one, depending on the choice of the individual. Although an agent needs to be paid and often needs a share of every project on top of his salary, he can be valuable in drumming up work for the shutter-bug, particularly at the beginning, since the agent will have connections in the fashion photography world.
